Is My Heart Ready To Receive?

General Conference was just a few weeks ago and I decided it's time to dive in again so that I can study and remind myself of the messages that were given. Today I started with the first talk given during the Saturday morning session by President Eyring entitled "Where Two or Three Are Gathered." I wanted to share my thoughts here, and may do so for other talks from the conference as well. :)
---------------------------------

Once upon a time I decided to plant some herbs...because that seems like something easy to grow right? And sorry, even though I started with the whole "once upon a time" phrase there won't be a handsome prince in this story. Let's just get that out there right now haha.

Anywho. I picked up some little pots and seeds at the store, brought them home and got to work. I didn't have any dirt so I grabbed some from an old pot we had in the garage. I put the dirt in, placing seeds close to surface and covered with a small layer of dirt. Then I labeled (so I didn't forget what I planted, cause I totally would) and watered.

By the end of the week, no life was in sight. I watered them each day. I gave them lots of sun. After week two, nothing still. I got out the little seed packets to see how long it was suppose to take for them to sprout and they should have been little baby plants by the second week! What was going on?! I determined that either I was REALLY a bad growing-green-things person or there was another problem at hand.

After three weeks, I decided my herb pots were officially herbless.

And I also realized why my seeds weren't growing...it was the dirt! The old, used, gross-o dirt that I had transferred from the pots in my garage! I assumed since it was still, ya know, brown that it would fine. I didn't think about what may have happened to the dirt in the last few years, that maybe it lost it's nutrients! That maybe because it looked like old clumpy dirt, that it actually was :)

This experience came to mind when I was listening to President Eyring's talk. He shared the scripture in Matthew 13 about the seed, the sower, and the soil. If the soil was stony, scorched, or thorny then the seeds could not take root and grow. But if the seed was planted in "good ground" then it brought forth fruit. President Eyring shared what the seed, the sower, and the soil each represent:

My poor little herbs seeds obviously had horrible soil that wasn't providing them with the nourishment that they needed. Likewise, my testimony needs the same attention and nourishment. If I want the seed of the gospel to grow and bring forth fruit in my life, my heart has to be a place where the gospel can take root, be nourished, and grow!

And for those looking for that nourishment during conference, President Eyring testified that the "words...will be carried into the heart of the humble listener who has come to the conference hungry for the good word of God." Humility is a huge part of having good soil. We have to be willing and wanting to hear the Lord's message for us. And this doesn't just apply during general conference but always!

So take at look at your heart, the soil where you want the seed of the word of God to take root. Is it stony or filled with pride? Is it thorny or maybe filled with the world? Is it old and gross-o from the garage? (Obviously these are my own little comparisons here...) Ask yourself, "Is my heart ready to receive the word of God?"

President Eyring adds that when we pray to feel the spirit and try to listen to the spirit, we can help our hearts to receive the word of God. He also challenged us to listen to the testimonies that are shared, especially during conference, because our leaders have been praying for guidance to know what the Lord would have them say and the spirit can help us to know the truth of their words. When we listen with the spirit we will feel closer to the Lord.

So I thought it was appropriate to end with the testimony that President Eyring shared at the end of his talk and I encourage you to prepare your heart so that you may continually nourish and feel the love of God. Because He is there. And He loves you.

9 Questions from Elder Ballard

In this last General Conference, Elder M. Russell Ballard spoke in the Priesthood Session to all of the young adult men about raising the bar for their generation. Though his talk "The Greatest Generation of Young Adults" was directed to the young men in conference, it can and should be applied to everyone - children, grandparents, young men and young women, mothers and fathers - since each of us needs to continually ponder the strength of our spirit and testimony.

Like I mentioned Elder Ballard shared that it is time to raise the bar. He said:

"What we need now is the greatest generation of
young adults in the history of the Church.
We need your whole heart and soul.
We need vibrant, thinking, passionate young adults
who know how to listen and respond to the
whisperings of the Holy Spirit as you
make your way through the daily trials and temptations
of being a young, contemporary Latter-day Saint."

He asked that you imagine sitting down in a one-on-one interview with him where he would ask the following questions to determine the strength of your testimony and devotion to God. My hope in re-sharing his questions is that you will take the time to really answer these questions during your scripture study, while writing in your journal, or in prayer. It is also a great topic for FHE if you are in the charge of the lesson :)

The questions are:

1.  Do you search the scriptures regularly?

2.  Do you kneel in prayer to talk with your Heavenly Father each morning and each night?

3.  Do you fast and donate a fast offering each month—even if you are a poor, struggling student who can’t afford to donate much?

4.  Do you think deeply about the Savior and His atoning sacrifice for you when you are asked to prepare, bless, pass, or partake of the sacrament?

5.  Do you attend your meetings and strive to keep the Sabbath day holy?

6.  Are you honest at home, school, church, and work?

7.  Are you mentally and spiritually clean? Do you avoid viewing pornography or looking at websites, magazines, movies, or apps, including Tinder and Snapchat photos, that would embarrass you if your parents, Church leaders, or the Savior Himself saw you?

8.  Are you careful with your time—avoiding inappropriate technology and social media, including video games, which can dull your spiritual sensitivity?

9.  Is there anything in your life you need to change and fix, beginning tonight?

Take the time to ponder your testimony, your heart, your actions. Where do you stand with God?

And if you'd like to watch Elder Ballard's talk you can do so below or here:

Fear not, I am with thee.

Some days I feel alone.
And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way right?

Our worries or struggles can make us feel isolated.
We may feel like no one understands or cares.

But I'm here to tell you that the Lord is ALWAYS with you.
It can be hard to tell, but say a prayer and ask for help in recognizing His presence.
Because He is there.

(from our Spring 2015 Issue)

There was a great talk given by Sister Jean A. Stevens in the April 2014 General Conference
called "Fear Not; I Am with Thee" that is such a great example of being surrounded by God's love.
PLEASE read it or watch it below.
I personally loved the stories that she shared of individuals who were experiencing loneliness or trial and how they were able to recognize and feel the presence of God in their lives.

You are not alone.
You are loved.

And I hope that you have a Happy Tuesday. :)

Are We Not All Beggars?

Yesterday in Sunday School we studied Matthew chapter 18.
I've read it before but it struck me so hard yesterday that I need to be more forgiving.

Let's quickly review what is in the scriptures.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The disciple Peter asked the Savior, "Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? tell seven times?"

The Savior responded with "seventy times seven" and then taught Peter through the parable of the unforgiving servant (found in Matthew 18:23-35):

There was a servant who owed his King 10,000 talents.
In our class someone said this was the equivalent of three LIFETIMES of work.
Meaning, the servant would have never been able to pay it!!!

The King commanded that the servant, his family, and all he owned should be sold to pay the debt.
The servant begged for patience from the King so that he could pay.
The King was compassionate and forgave him the debt.
THREE LIFETIMES of debt!

That same servant then found one of his buddies who owed him 100 pence.
In class this was said this was about three months of wages.
NOTHING compared to the three lifetimes of wages that servant #1 owed.

The buddy couldn't pay and begged for patience, in fact, he used the same exact phrase of "have patience with me and I will pay thee all" that the servant used when speaking with the King.
But the servant had no compassion and threw his buddy in prison until the debt could be paid.

Others saw what had been done and told the King of this servant's actions.
He was called before the King who said, "O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thous desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee?" The unforgiving servant was then delivered to the "tormentors" until he could pay the debt.

Christ then says:

------------------------------------------------------------------

So what's the take-away message here?

If we are not willing to forgive others of their debt or offenses or rude comments or unkind actions or whatever it may be that hurt us or inconvenienced us, our Heavenly Father WILL NOT forgive us.

That's pretty clear.

Which led me to think about the talk from Elder Holland last fall "Are We Not All Beggars?"

Am I not in just as much debt to my Father in Heaven as the next person?
Don't I have just as many weaknesses, sins, faults, errors, misjudgments, imperfections, misdeeds, flaws, and more that I NEED God to forgive me for?

If I have any glimmer of hope for forgiveness or any little bit of belief that the Atonement of Jesus Christ can help me overcome my HUGE PILE of shortcomings, how could I not forgive someone else? How could I expect God's grace to cover me but not them.

Something to think about.

Here are a couple of talks that I thought were helpful on the subject or forgiving others and helping others that you could listen to:

Spring 2015 Women's Meeting Quotes

I know this was over a week ago and I'm just barely getting to posting about it...
but that's just how life is eh?

But I LOVED this General Women's Meeting so much!
The general theme "The Family is of God" is just such a sacred topic
and I was so thankful for the guidance and inspiration from our wonderful leaders.
It gave me an added measure of excitement and desire to be a more active and supportive member of my family, to defend the sacredness of the family, and to help my home become a more sacred environment.

I won't go into any more details now, but I think in the future I'll highlight some of the individual talks because they were just SO awesome!!!!
For now you can Pin, save, or share any of these meme's with some of my favorite quotes from the meeting. (All made with the #rhonnadesigns app) Enjoy!

What was your favorite talk?
And for any of you who missed the meeting, you can watch it or read it here.
